Rules of the Competition
1. The Concept
The Second Annual Epoch International Photography Competition is looking for photographers to submit work based on real events reflecting humanity, social conditions, and the natural environment, in a manner that express the spirit of justice, kindness and beauty. The goal is to revive the ideas and forms of traditional aesthetics; these will form the basis for evaluating the submitted photography.
2. The Organizers:
The competition is hosted by The Epoch Times Website, The Epoch Times Newspaper and The Epoch Times Foundation.
3. Awards and Categories
A: News and on-the-spot reports
B: Life in society
C: Landscapes
Each category has one First Prize, two Second Prizes, four Third Prizes and ten Excellence Awards.
First Prize: 2,000 USD or its equivalent in photography equipment or travel services.
Second Prize: 1,000 USD for each winner, or its equivalent in photography equipment or travel services.
Third Prize: 500 USD for each winner, or its equivalent in photography equipment or travel services.
Excellence Awards:100 USD for each winner, or its equivalent in photography equipment or travel services.
Each participant may submit up to four photos for each category, totaling no more than twelve photos in all. There is no limit to the number of works that can be selected per photographer.
All chosen entries will receive a certificate from the sponsoring organizations. Some selected entries will be shown on The Epoch Times website.
4. The Deadline
Submissions must be received before March 30, 2009, 23:59 (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).
5. Rules for Participation
Entries must be original and cannot have won any other photography competition. Entries will be submitted mainly online. Entries sent by postal mail will not be accepted.

Entry Application Procedures:
On-line submission: http://img5.epochtimes.com:8000/en/auth/login Send a sample file first. The resolution of a photograph should not be smaller than 500 KB or larger than 2,000 KB. The maximum resolution image should be sent only after a photograph has been selected.
E-mail submission: Email submissions should be sent to photo_competition@epochtimes.com.
PLEASE NOTE: E-mail submission is mainly for participants living in mainland China, or other places with strict Internet censorship. For this purpose, you can obtain software to break through the network blockade. The software can be downloaded from: http://dongtaiwang.com/loc/download.php or another secure location, the link of which we can send you via email.
Those from other areas, please use the online submission to simplify the process. By submitting online, entrants can obtain a confirmation number to be used for future inquiries, etc.
6. Registration Details
In most cases, participants should complete the online registration form to create an online submission account. The name on the form should be identical to the participant's name shown on a valid identification document, and include mailing address (including postal code and country name), email address, phone number and any other means of contact to help us notify selected finalists.
Participants who submit their entries via email should follow the instructions above, and add titles of photos, their categories, and a description (or caption) of the photos in the body of the email.
7. The naming convention of photos should be as follows:
Country(abbreviation)-Area(State or Province)-Participant_Name-Category_Name-Photo_Title.
For example:
USA-NY-JackWang-A-GreatNews
USA-NY-JackWang-B-FlyingCrane
NY-JackWang-C-Mr.Healthy
8. Requirements for photos:
Adjusting of color, darkness and light, and sharpening are allowed when the aim is to enhance the natural look. Image processing resulting in the loss of natural features and/or copying to add or delete photographic elements are not acceptable.
If the submitted photos relate to an incident or news event, participants should provide a brief description or caption explaining the incident.
9. Jury:
The jury will be composed of senior professionals and experts in photography, arts and publishing from Asia as well as Western countries. The judging process is bound by international customs and follows the guidelines of the competition with the intention of being fair to each and every participant.
The organizers of the competition are not obliged to explain the reason(s) why participants' photographs may not have won an award.
10. Copyright:
The organizer of the competition reserves the right to reproduce the submitted photographs in competition-related print and electronic media, as well as in related competition-related promotion, publications, website postings and other activities. Sole copyright remains with the author. The participants will not be paid for the presentation of their work related to this competition, apart from prized they have own.
The organizer will not be responsible for any violation of copyrights, national or international law or damage to reputation of anyone caused by any of the submitted works. Entries will not be returned to their authors. Submission of an entry to this competition implies acceptance of all of the conditions stated here.
11. Miscellaneous
1) All participants are expected to adhere to the rules. The organizer of the competition reserves the right to disqualify any participant who violates the rules and also cancel their awards.
2) The jury's decision will be considered final; no complaints or appeals will be heard.
3) The rules are subject to minor changes without further notice.
